What Are Keywords

This is something everyone will ask themselves at some point if they decide to start a website up of their own.

At some point you realise that you are not receiving any traffic from search engines and start searching for seo websites.

Most of these websites will mention keywords at some point, but never really give you a complete honest guide.

A keyword is something we need to use within our content, the seo spider when spidering a web page understands what that web page is all about.

If I was to write a web page about golf you would need to mention the word golf, then the search engine spiders know that page is about golf.

If you only used the word golf once within your content and you had 3 A4 pages of text and mention the word ball more times the seo spider would think the web page was more based on the word ball than golf.

If you used the word golf as many times as you could fit it in, the search engines will know you are stuffing the page with keywords and you would be penalised in your search engine rankings or removed completely.

What are keywords and why do I need to use them?

The reason you need to use keywords is to rank high in search engines for that keyword and when someone types in golf your web page that is based on golf is in the top of the search engines result pages.

We all know that ranking high naturally in search engines means traffic and hopefully lots of it.

What are keywords and is it just one word?

Now a keyword can be a keyword phrase like “golf balls” for instance and then you are using two words as your keyword.

You can even use 3 or 4 words to make a keyword phrase.

This would then tell the spiders that your web page was about golf balls and not just golf.

Then you could use a phrase like “hitting golf balls” and so on.

If you go to Google and type in “golf” it will bring back around 388 million results for the word golf.

That means out of all the web pages Google has indexed 388 million of them have the word golf within the content.

Type in “golf balls” and you get nearly 5 million results come back which means 5 million web pages have the word golf and balls within them.

Now “hitting golf balls” has a few hundred thousand web pages.
I think you get the picture now!!

This is how the search engines use keywords to determine what those web pages are about.

Now it must be obvious that you can’t just go and stick some keywords in your content and reach the top ten of Google.

You have a lot of competition and you need to know where else you place these keywords than just within your content.

Oh and using the right keywords help too, using the wrong ones and you will never reach the top ten of Google.
