Above the Fold

Most search engines have 10 results per page, plus ppc ads and some now also show video’s, images and shopping results too. The first page of most search engines now have a huge range of results that match your search term.

It is a fact that less than 20% of people will click down to the second page of a search engine results pages. Being on page 1 of a search engine is hugely important to gain more traffic than the competition.

Taking this a step forward most users will click on a result that is instantly visable, so depending on the size of your computer screen some results will be visable and some will not. This is what they call the fold. Being above the fold will return much more traffic than being below and sometimes this is the difference between being in 5th or 6th.

The reason I mention this is that above the fold is going to also start playing a SEO factor according to Google for onpage SEO. Basically more emphasis is going to be placed on visable content, links and images than that of which you need to scroll down too.

This is going to make an interesting change, though I feel that it will not impact most of us.

Yahoo Site Explorer – the end

Yahoo Site Explorer

Yahoo Site Explorer has come to an end as of 21st Nov 2011. This is quite sad in my eyes as this was the first tool I ever used to start doing link campaigns. It was fairly accurate and was a great quick and easy tool to use to give you an indication of competitors incoming links.

If you use yahoo explorer for your SEO methods then you are going to have to look for alternatives and with many SEO software packages out thier that relied on Yahoo site explorer you need to make sure you have something in place quickly to replace this.

Just like to say goodbye and thank you to Yahoo Site Explorer for helping me kick start my business many years ago.

Harrys Amusements

Couple of weeks ago I launched Harrys Amusements and forgot to mention it as it has been busy as of late.

Harrys Amusements have two locations in Birmingham and Derby.

If you live near the area why not pay them a visit, free tea and coffee, always a bonus in my eyes.

Finding Websites To Link With

If you are attempting to carry out your own SEO campaign then finding websites to link with can be very challenging and is time consuming for even us who do it on a daily basis.

Many SEO companies use software to collect email addresses from websites and then send a mass email out hoping to get a good percentage reply for a link exchange. This is one area I do not use software and tend to do it manually as the replies are higher and the links you gain are of more value.

Lets start by finding websites to exchange links with, most important aspect here is to exchange links with websites related to yours, though be aware direct competition will most likely ignore your email. The easiest way is that websites that have a resources page or links page are more likely going to up for exchanging links. Most of these will call thier file name either links.html or resources.html and the the extension could change to .php, .asp, .html or many others. Use Google to search for websites that have a filename like this by searching for inurl:links.html this will return a list of websites that have a links page.

You need related websites, to progress on from this search for inurl:links.html keyword replace keyword with a word related to your website theme.

You can do this again and again by changing the keyword, the file extension or the page name. You can then click on each website in Google and find thier email address and then email them offering a link exchange.

The good thing with this is that…

  1. They have a links page.
  2. The links page ranks high in Google for a keyword related to your website.
  3. You can email them by saying you visited thier website and seen thier links page and even show the web address to show you have.

I never place my websites linking information into the first email, that is just rude, ask them to take a look at your website and if they feel they would like to exchange links to reply and then send linking details. Make it thier choice.

Good Luck

Now the site is larger we have managed to target more keyword phrases and location keywords. This alone and with the news section attached to the site will only attract more visitors over time.

Hide My Ass

Every month I send a rankings report for each client, each report could have 10 keyword phrases reported on or even 500 keywords. As my clients have grown I have had to purchase software to make my life easier. I remember when I first started out I was manually searching each keyword in every major search engine. Now with me having to check over 5000 keyword phrases a month I have software to index the search engines for me.

The trouble is search engines do not like being indexed and after a while you get kicked out or banned for sometimes hours on end which is no good when you need to get lots of reports out to clients.

Hide My Ass

Then while searching online I read about Hide My Ass, fantastic, I can now change my ip location within a few clicks and the search engines never kick me out.

Hide My Ass has many features but this is a huge time saver for me.

Mega Site Links

There are talks going on that Google have tested and now rolling out Mega Site Links, are they here to stay?

I have not spotted them yet but this is really going to benefit websites that receive them but knock websites below them beneath the fold.

Here is an image of normal sitewide links.

Here is a snap shot from Googles search results showing WebmasterWorld with Mega Site Links and it is at Webmaster World where most of the talk is taking place.

Google Pagerank Update

A pagerank update has happened, though I can not confirm this yet. I have had a handful of sites stay the same, many websites move up one and quite a few jump up 2 steps.

PageRank is Googles view  of how importance a web page is by considering millions of  variables. Web pages they believe are important have a higher PageRank and to a certain degree rank higher in the search results.

Pagerank is only one way to measure the strength of a website and other methods should be used when doing SEO.

If you do not know what pagerank is then it is the little box that is in your browser with part of it being green. You may not have this installed or turned on so check your settings.
