You visit a directory, find your catergoty, hit submit website, fill in the details and it’s done.
Building links, one way links, is important and this is what directories will do for you.
Some people will go searching for that quality high pagerank link which will boost your website, but if that link ever gets removed your site will drop again.
Having a nice foundation of links from directories will always maintain your rankings in search engines to a certain degree.

The big two seo directories are yahoo and dmoz. They will both help your website in may ways. Yahoo is expensive, but rather quick to get listed compared to dmoz that is free. Dmoz can take a very long time to get listed.
2nd Tier Seo Directories
Niche directories that compliment your website and 2nd tier directories.
These we not provide as much traffic, but are worth submitting your website too. You can also search for local directories if you are running a service in a town or city.
Should I pay for Submission or Link Back
Some directories will charge for submission, if you are just starting out you may want to give this a miss and stick to the free ones.
The best way to decide if you should pay a fee is to check thier traffic rankings.
Just visit Alexa and type in the web address of the directory, if they are ranked in the top 1million then go for it. The lower the rank the better.
This also goes for directories that require a link back, if they are in the top 1 million at Alexa then back to them.
