Off page SEO has become more important to achieve high rankings, this is due to on page SEO becoming easier for webmasters to learn.
On page SEO is important, when done correctly your web pages will have thier highest possible ranking before you start any off page seo.
All off page SEO is mainly about building link popularity and how search engines determine the importance of different incoming links.
The SEO links section explains many aspects about links, I will concentrate on what links are good and what ones are not so good in this section.
90% of off page SEO is building incoming links in one way or another.
The more incoming links your website has the higher your link popularity will become and in turn your website will have higher placement in search engine result pages.
This does not mean that a website with 100 incoming links will necessary rank higher than a website with 50 incoming links. This is due to the quality of the incoming links that they have gained.
Reciprocal – 3 Way Linking – One Way

Swapping links with other webmasters is time consuming, using SEO link exchange programs will speed up this process. But don’t join link farms.
Some people will tell you that reciprocal linking is disliked by the search engines. I disagree, I would say that they just wouldn’t give that link as much weight.
If we all stopped swapping links then the World Wide Web would become a broken web. Try and swap links with similar themed websites to yours, it will benefit your site.
3 Way Linking
This is a method that is used around the net which instead of exchanging links with another webmaster you have 3 webmasters involved.
Imagine a triangle and on each point you have a website. The first website links to next which links to the next website which links to the website that started the linking process.
You all gain an incoming link without linking back as you are linking out to another website.
This would give the incoming link more weight and your outgoing link is doing the next webmaster the same favour.
A very good way to use this system which involves 3 websites is if you own two of the websites.
I own two and when someone asks to exchange links you can link to them from one of your websites and ask them to link to your other website. This may be bad for one website but very good for the other as you are gaining an incoming link without linking out at all.
One Way Linking
This is the best quality link you can get without taking other factors into play. There many ways to gain these links which I will explain shortly.
There are many aspects to take into consideration when trying to weigh up the quality of an incoming link to help your off page SEO. I will go through them one by one.
PageRank
Top of my list is pagerank.
The higher the websites pagerank the more quality the incoming link will be.
This is because the website that is linking to you would have lots of quality links linking to them.
Websites Theme
A website based on the same theme as your website would give a good value link, but exchanging links or linking to direct competition is not always wise.
Where a website is completely unrelated search engines would not give the link as much weight.
The Links Placement
Common mistake is that you need to check the webpages pagerank that your link will be placed on.
The homepage of a website might be page rank 3 but the page they place your link on may only be pagerank 1. You don’t want to go linking to them from a pagerank 3 webpage and only get a link back from a pagerank 1.
Another thing to try and do is to try and have your link placed no further than 2 clicks away from the websites homepage. More than 2 clicks away and search engines deem these webpages to be less important.
Check how many other outgoing links there are on the page your link is going to be placed.
Link pages really devalue the quality of a link especially if there are hundreds of links on one page.
If there is any more than 10 links then do not expect a quality link.
All links do still help your website but many factors devalue them.
Keywords
Having your keywords within your link will help the value of an incoming link.
Adding a description near the link with keywords would help even more.
Having a web page full of keywords that your website is based on would help as well.
This is why many people write articles that are keyword rich, it provides a one way link and are mainly posted at high pagerank article websites.
Remember the more links a website has does not mean that they are ranked higher than others with less incoming links. The higher your link popularity the higher your page rank will be.
