How popular is your niche?

Finding out how popular your idea is, has got to be the most important step when deciding on an idea.

Does the keyword or niche idea you entered have between 400 and 1700 searches a day. If so this is a perfect niche.

Anymore than 1700 you will find it difficult to rank high in search engines and any lower than 400 you may rank high in search engines, but the amount of traffic you receive will be less.

It will take longer to rank high in search engines if you are nearer 1700  searches, but quicker if your idea is nearer 400. Anywhere in between this range is achievable.

 

If your Niche is too large

Now there are two ways you can move forward with this.

• If your idea has over 1700 searches then look down the list of results for a new niche idea that fits into the niche range and base you website on that.
• Keep your idea if it is over 1700 especially if it is something you have a passion about and steal some of the market using long tail keywords. This involves much more work.

For example this website is based on seo, but the competition is huge.

I am after the people that type in “seo web design services” into search engines and other similar keywords. Then I use other long tail keywords to pull other traffic in from the search engines.

I know that seo web design falls just under the niche range, but there are many combinations you can make with a 4 keyword domain name.

Use these tools to find a good domain name for your website, this websites niche is in the domain I have choosen.

If you typed in for example "holidays" and the search results are too high, look further down the list for another idea, something like holiday music, you could build a website based on that and include it within your domain name.

Like www.holiday-music.com or if that is not available then www.relaxing-holiday-music.com may be a good choice. You are just adding a word on the front or end but still keeping your choosen niche domain name together.

This is important, later you will learn that building incoming links is a very important part of seo web design.

By using a keyword domain name, every link that comes into your website has the words "holiday music" within the link.

This will help push your site up the search engine result pages for the keyword phrase you chose as a niche and a domain name. This will help work you site towards the number one spot of Google to receive most of thoose 400 to 1700 people a day.

Having incoming links saying joebloggswebsite.com will not help your website when it is about holiday music. Please don't go making up your very own name that you feel is cool because it will not help your website.

When you use this tool click on search it and 4 little boxes come up. In the first box choose domain names, in the second box choose domain name availability and then in the third box type in www.your-domain-name.com then hit search it and follow the instructions.

Check Out Your Competition

If your idea is in the perfect range and you feel that this is the idea for you, you can then use google search to your advantage.

Go type your idea into Google and see in the top right corner how many web pages you have to compete with for that idea.

Anything over a million is classed as being competitive, anything under is easily achievable.

 

Check the Amount & Quality of the Competition

You can even do deeper research, doing the following process will give you an indication of how much work will be involved to reach Google’s first page.

Now that is a lot of web pages to compete with, but to double check the quality of the competition you can do two things.

The first is type “holiday music” into google with the speech marks.

As you can see not as many websites are using that exact term of holiday music, these gives you an indication of your real competition.

Next

Second in Google when I searched for holiday music was www.musicholiday.com, do the following process with the top ten in Google, I will show you just one.

Go to yahoo explorer and type the address in and hit search, click on inlinks and then choose except from this domain in the drop down menu.

This shows you how many inlinks the website has, this website has 4. You could build more inlinks than that in an hour, which means you can easily rank above them.

 

Do All The Checks

You must do all the above checks, as you can see when you search for holiday music is shows 50 plus million web pages, but second in google only has 4 inlinks. So you could easily be in googles top 10 even though you have 50 plus million sites to compete with.
