HTML Link Code

Using the correct html link code can help your search engines rankings and keep visitors at your website.

Option One

<a href=”http://www.domain-name.com/web-page-name.html”> The name of your link goes here</a>

Option Two

<a href=”http://www.domain-name.com” target=”_blank”> the name of your link goes here</a>

Option One

This option when used leaves the web page the visitor is on and takes them to a new web page. This option must be used when linking between your own web pages.

Option Two

This option must be used when linking to other websites, this will open a new web page leaving your web page sat in the background. This will help your search engine rankings.

This is all down to search engines measuring human behaviour while they visit your website. They measure two main things

1. How long a visitor stays at your website.
2. If he returns to the search engine with the back button.

How Search Engines Measure Human Behaviour

Mr Smith logs onto his computer and searches for how to build a brick wall. The search engine within seconds gives a list of websites that the search engine feels will provide him with the information he is looking for.

Mr Smith scans the results and sees a website he feels will be the one to give him his answer. He enters the website and straight away realises that this website is no good and presses the back button to return to his search engine results to pick another website.

Now how often have you done this and how often can you imagine this happens every single day.

As soon as Mr Smith arrives at the search engine the search engine is timing and watching what he does. They know that he clicks into a website and they know Mr Smith came straight back out 3 seconds later.

What do you think the search engines will think of this if it happens hundreds of times a day?

Now if Mr Smith finds what he is looking for he will be there for a while longer reading the information he has been searching for. This tells the search engine that this page must contain useful information and therefore get giving extra brownie points.

If You Use The Correct HTML Link Code

When you use the correct html code and visitors leave your website, your website is still open in the background, as far as the search engines believe you either want to keep it there or your still reading it.
