How To Build A Website
How To Build A Website
How to build a website correctly.
I am not talking about the design, the graphics, but how to insure your website once launched will attract thousands of visitors a month.
There is plenty of planning to be done before you even consider building your first web page.
How to Build a Website – Step 1
Checking your website niche can produce results
You need to find out how popular your website theme is being searched for on a daily basis and this is where Wordtracker comes into play. It takes seconds to get the results you need.
For guidance on finding your perfect niche visit the niche finder section.
Now you can also use this free wordtracker tool to find a good domain name for your website.
If you type in for example "holidays" and the searches are too high as explained in the niche finder section, but further down the list something caught your eye like "holiday music" that you would like to build a website about you need to have that keyword phrase within your domain name.
Like www.holiday-music.com or if that is not available then www.relaxing-holiday-music.com may be a good choice.
You are just adding a word on the front or end, but still keeping your chosen niche domain name together.
This is important because later you will learn that building incoming links is another important part of seo web design. This means that every link that comes into your website has the words "holiday music" within the link which will help your search engine rankings.
Having incoming links saying joebloggswebsite.com will not help your website when it is about holiday music.
Then use the SEARCH IT TOOL to see if that domain name is available.
You should now have a website niche that you know for a fact is being searched for on a daily basis. Plus if you have chosen a theme like “holiday music” and kept that keyword phrase within your domain name like www.holiday-music.com then this is the perfect start you can get to creating a successful website.
How to Build a Website – Step 2
Creating your website layout
You have your home page sorted out already, the theme is holiday music the web address is www.holiday-music.com and the keyword for that home page is also going to be “holiday music”.
Now you need to plan the rest of your website before you start building web pages.
Profitable Long Tail Keywords
You need to base each web page you plan on a keyword phrase that is related to your website niche, they are all going to be phrases that are being searched for every day and that the supply of these keywords throughout the world wide web is low.
Now to do this you do need a tool to supply you with long tail keywords with their supply, demand and profitability values.
Use Google or Wordtracker for keywords.
Now the free tool that you used earlier at wordtracker is no good for this purpose as it only supplies the demand and top 100 keywords. To find keywords manually would take you months, but if that is what you want visit how to find keywords section.
Now I shall assume you are using wordtracker.
You have your keyword tool and now type in your main keyword, what your website theme is based on. I shall use the keyword “pets” for an example.
This is what you will get in return but obviously a much larger list. Print of the list below for an example of the process you need to follow.
Your Master Keyword List based on your Main Keyword
The list shows 4 columns
- Is the name of the long tail keyword.
- The demand of each keyword, i.e. how many people are searching for that exact term.
- The supply of each keyword, i.e. how many other webpage’s contain that keyword.
- The profitability, this is a combined measurement of numbers two and three.
Now print off the website blue print.
You will be able to enter your keyword for your home page in the box at the top with home page written next to it. I have entered the keyword for an example of a pet website.
Now with the list of keywords from the list you will need to fill every box in the blue print, but before that you need to delete some keywords and move them into relevant sections.
Deleting Keywords
You need to delete keywords that are going to be no use to. To do this delete keywords that are not related to your theme and keywords with very very low demand or profitability.
You are left with keywords that you can use throughout your website.
Print the below to see an example.
Master keyword List showing which keywords to delete
Grouping Keywords
Next you have to group keywords together that are closely related which you can use within one section of your website.
I have doctored the above list into sections that you can print off and view what I have done.
As you can see I have now grouped the keywords together into sections which I can now layout onto the blueprint.
Remember if you Wordtracker then you would have thousands of keywords. You can always do other searches on other main keywords that may be related to your main keyword.
For example if you were to build a website on ponds, then your first search would to use the word “ponds" and then maybe another search on “Koi”.
The blue print now has a keyword phrase for every single web page that you will create, you know for a fact that each page you build in based on a keyword that is being searched for.
You also know which ones will rank high in search engines before others as you know the supply of each keyword.
From the blue print the home page is obliviously your home page, the second tier web page’s is what your navigation bar is based on like mine to the left and the 3rd tier web page’s link from text links within your 2nd tier web page’s.
Whenever you write content for your 2nd tier web page’s insure to remember you have to link to your 3rd tier webpage’s. This whole website is based on this principle so feel free to have a look around.
How to Build a Website – Step 3
Understanding Traffic
I am not going to go into the numerous ways to attract visitors or build links but just the basic principle of attracting free targeted website traffic from search engines.
There are 3 ways to keep it simple.
1. Content
What I mean by content is the amount of web page’s you build, if you built a single web page based on a long tail keyword and that webpage received 4 visitors a day it does not seem like much. But 4 visitors a day over a 30 day month becomes 120 visitors a month. If you then make 500 web page’s based on different related keywords that could possible attract 60,000 visitors a month.
I have seen many websites that only have between 50 to 100 incoming links but are ranked in the top 1% of all websites world wide for traffic, because they have hundreds bordering onto thousands of web page’s.
2. Incoming Links
The more incoming links your website has the higher your pages will rank in search engines.
I have seen websites ranked in the top 1% of all websites with only 50 web page’s, but have thousands of incoming links. This way each page will attract more visitors.
3. Both of the above together
Or you can do both of the above, doing both is a slower process but will insure you receive thousands of visitors every single month.
How to Build a Website – Step 4
Creating a Webpage
I will only not explain how to build a website but only one web page as all the rest of your web pages would be built on exactly the same principles.
For this example I will build a 2nd tier web page from the blue print above.
I shall use a 2nd tier keyword phrase of “Pet Names” which is the keyword that must be used in many different areas to insure maximum on page seo.
The file name/webpage name
The filename would be pet-names.html and would look like this in a browser where the web address is shown.
www.pets.com/pet-names.html
Meta Tags
You should use the keyword phrase in 3 meta tags, the title tag, description tag and keywords tag.
This is how your meta tags should look in your html code.
<title>Pet Names</title>
<META Name="Description" Content="Choosing pet names can be very difficult. We supply all sorts of fantastic names that will suit your pet.">
<META Name="Keywords" Content="pet names">
As you can see I have used “pet names” in all 3 meta tags. This is a must.
You can also add other words within your title and description but as long as you keep the chosen keyword phrase for this web page together.
How to Build a Website – Step 5
The Content of your Webpage
Now it’s down to the actual content of your web page that the human eye will see. But at the same time as making it interesting and useful to the human eye you need to please the seo spiders that visit your website and index it.
Where do you use and how many times do you use your chosen keyword for each web page?
There are always 3 places you must always use the chosen keyword.
Title
The first one is in the title of the page. Try and always use header tags in your html coding either being <h1>your title</h1> or <h2>your title</h2>
So for example it would be <h2>Pet Names</h2>
Or as long as you have the chosen keyword within the title like….
<h2>Choosing Pet Names</h2>
First 500 Characters of every web page you build
You must use the chosen keyword in the first 100 characters and then not again until after the first 500 characters. So try and maybe start your first sentence of with the keyword like…..
Pet names can vary from a normal human name to something very strange or cute ……bla bla bla
Or use it somewhere in the first sentence like………
People can find it very difficult to choose from so many available pet names that are around today.
Outgoing internal link
You need a link that links to another one of your web page’s that has the chosen keyword within the link. I always use one at the bottom of every web page I build that says for example “leave pet names section and return to pets.com home page” or something like that.
Where else do you use the chosen keyword
Well if your web page has only around 500 characters then you do not need to use it again otherwise search engines may feel you are keyword stuffing your web page.
But if it has more than 500 characters then you can add keywords anywhere you like as long as it is after the first 500 characters.
See Table below
10,000 Characters |
13 Keywords |
5,000 Characters |
8 Keywords |
3,000 Characters |
5 Keywords |
1,500 Characters |
4 Keywords |
1,000 Characters |
3 Keywords |
Just use word count in Microsoft word to see how many characters you web page has then follow the table.
As long as you roughly stick to these guidelines you will be fine. You do not have to get it perfect as long as it is there abouts.
How to Build a Website – Step 6
Finally the last two places you must use your chosen keyword
Whenever you link to this web page from any other web page’s make sure you use the chosen keyword within the text link and if it is a second tier web page then the navigation bar would have a button that said Pet Names as well.
When you start building incoming links to your website you need to try and use the chosen keyword. The good thing is that your domain name includes good keywords already.
Whether you are adding your website to a directory or writing articles use your keywords when you can and try to follow the same principles as writing a web page as above.
You can also visit this test page that I have set up that explains using keywords within your content as you read through the page.
