Never trust a web designer to do seo. There are web designers and there are webmasters and I can guarantee that the majority of web designers know nothing or very little about seo.
To be honest they are ask to design a website, not to rank high in search engines.
One good reason you should do seo yourself is that you know your business and therefore can utilise your long tail keywords to your advantage.
For example, do you really think I would have built this web page and called it “do it yourself seo” unless I knew that it was a profitable long tail keyword and would rank high in search engines pulling me in lots of free targeted traffic.
Why didn’t I call it “how to do seo yourself” because I know that this web page would then have been lost in cyber space and been a complete waste of my time.
Some seo companies may use blackhat systems that may gain traffic for a short period.
Then either the search engines will change the way their algorithm works and your web pages will drop and lose traffic. Then the company may charge you again for another service or maintenance fee.
Even worse the search engines will notice that black hat methods are being used and remove your website from their database altogether. Not Good.
Not all seo companies use blackhat methods, but just be careful.
