The definition of a niche online is all about keyword competition. Basically choosing a topic that is not so popular or aiming your website at a section of a larger market will be more successful.

Niche ventures may become very profitable for an individual, even though they are by nature small in comparison to large companies at the top of the mainstream marketplace.

A gap in the market is what some might say, or what I do is steal some of the market from under nose of the competition.

For example this website is mainly about seo, but when I type seo into Google I have well over 200 million web pages to compete with.

This can be quite duanting, how can anyone compete with that sort of competition. I am still ranked high in search engines even though the competition is stupidly high.

I have targeted the keyword phrase “seo web design” as my marketplace, thousands of people search for this every month, but there is less competition for this keyword phrase than seo.

I only need thousands of visitors to survive online, I don’t need the millions that search for seo every year. Even though that would be nice.

Don’t build a website based on holidays, build one on holidays in Antigua or adventure holidays. Just steal part of their market.

 

Online Niche

When building a website you need to use long tail keywords to become successful and by using the above method you are making it easier to rank high in the search engines.

For example there will be lots of websites using keyword phrases like “clothes”, ”children’s clothes” but not as many using “children’s wedding clothes”.

This means it is easier to rank high for this keyword phrase as the supply of this keyword from other websites is less. I typed in the 3 above keyword phrases into Google and this is what I got:-

Clothes there was 151 million web pages to compete with.

Childrens clothes was 1 million 490 thousand web pages to compete with.

Childrens wedding clothes there was only 265 thousand web pages to compete with.
